Annandale & Nithsdale Community Benefit Company

Supporting young social entrepreneurs

St Georges Church Hall Dumfries

Thursday 26th March 3.00 pm

A Community Dragon’s Den event will take place where schools in the ANCBC area will be given the opportunity to pitch for £500 prize for their school to bring about a social enterprise activity that their school will undertake with the prize money.

There will be a local panel of Community Dragons for each school to pitch to in a 10/15 minute slot for them to feature their idea and justify how it will benefit their school community. The Community Dragons will then make a decision in the winning pitch.

Power Point resources will be available or Story Boards could be used

What is a social enterprise?

Social enterprises are businesses that trade to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, or the environment.  They make their money from selling goods and services in the open market, but they reinvest their profits back into the business or the local community.

When these businesses profit, society also profits.

Social enterprises are in our communities and on our high streets – from coffee shops and cinemas, to pubs and leisure centres, banks and bus companies.

Examples in schools would include:

Tuck Shop – Book and Stationary Shop – Bake Sales that fund say a book club or toy library or computer games club etc – After School Club – Teen Café – School Newspaper / Magazine or Yearbook  Computer games / android apps

Or any activity where an enterprise / business is started and the profits are invested back in the school or community – money for school trips / equipment etc.

What the ‘dragons’ are likely to look for is:

Quality of idea – How well presented is it?

Does it add up?

Will it make a surplus?

What will the surplus be used for?

What will the young people have learnt?

Could it be sustainable?

Who will it benefit?

I hope all that helps and good luck with your ideas.
